Every Wednesday, Chido Mukombachoto arrives at the Rugare Reading Program carrying more than just storybooks or reading material. She brings a heart full of warmth and a passion for helping children feel seen, heard, and loved.
As a longtime Zimworx volunteer, Chido is a key part of the center’s reading program, a weekly literacy initiative for vulnerable children founded by Zimworx. These sessions are not just about learning to read. They are about building confidence, connection, and joy in children who often carry burdens far too heavy for their age.
At the beginning of this term, Chido had an idea that went beyond books. So she decided to do something small and extraordinary.
She and her mother rolled up their sleeves, dusted off their cake tins, and spent the weekend baking a cake from scratch. It was not just any cake. A triple-layer masterpiece, swirled with fudge, frosted with care, and topped with sprinkle and a message WELCOME TO TERM 3.
Inspired by Zimworx’s values the cake was excellently done. She wanted every child to feel special and celebrated.
When Zimworx arrived at Rugare’s reading program with the cake, the room went silent. Eyes widened and for a moment, the chaos of the day melted into pure wonder. And when the children tasted the cake, they felt it was warm, rich, and filled with love. Their laughter filled the room like music.
“Its really delicious,” whispered one little girl.
Chido did not do it for praise. She did it because she believes in God’s love and she folded it into batter, poured it into a pan, and shared one slice at a time. For her every task is an opportunity to serve God and others. Zimworx gave her that opportunity to serve and volunteer in the ministry dearest to her. She could work at the same time and have a chance to transform lives while making a global impact. She feels satisfied and fulfilled. Small acts done in love can open hearts and transform lives. Through the Workplace Wellness department, Zimworx strives to create meaningful opportunities for volunteerism creating Wins for the Team Members and the Community we serve.
That cake was not just dessert, it was a memory. A ministry. A reminder that someone cared enough to go the extra mile. And for those children and other volunteers, it was a moment of a sweet chapter that meant everything.
At Zimworx, we believe that our workplace is our mission field. A place where our excellence, or faith, and our love become our greatest witness.
