A Warmer Winter, Brighter Futures: How Zimworx Is Supporting Rugare Children

For Chipo Mupfawa, a teacher at the bridging school at Rugare Orphan Care, some of the most rewarding moments are the simplest,  seeing a child settle comfortably into class on a cold morning, watching a student read with growing confidence, or hearing the excitement in the classroom as Wednesday approaches and the children prepare for their next lesson with Zimworx volunteers.

Through our continued partnership with Rugare as Zimworx, we are helping make these moments possible, providing practical support that is making a meaningful difference in the children’s daily lives and educational journeys.

This winter, we donated school jerseys to Rugare’s students, helping them stay warm and focus on their lessons. Previously, some children would sit in the sun before class to warm themselves against the cold. Now, with their jerseys, they can settle into the school day more comfortably.

“We are grateful for Zimworx’s continued assistance,” Chipo says. “The parents have also expressed their gratitude, and the students are happy and warm, as they now do not have to sit in the sun to get warm before lessons begin.”

It is a simple intervention, but one that speaks to the importance of meeting children’s everyday needs. When students are warm and comfortable, they are better placed to concentrate, participate and make the most of their time in the classroom. For their parents, the donation is also a welcome reminder that their children’s well-being matters. Yet our support extends beyond keeping the children warm. Through the reading programme, we are helping Rugare students strengthen their English literacy and spelling skills, building a foundation that will support them throughout their education.

“Zimworx has also helped us immensely through the reading programme, as our students are now able to read English properly, and their spellings have also improved,” Chipo shares.

For a teacher, witnessing this progress is deeply rewarding. Each new word read, sentence understood and spelling mastered represents another step towards greater confidence and independence. Reading opens doors to learning across subjects, helps children communicate their ideas and gives them tools they can carry into the future.

The programme’s impact is strengthened by the commitment of our volunteers, who give their time to work with the students and support their learning. Their regular visits offer the children opportunities to practise, ask questions and develop their skills in an encouraging environment. In fact, Wednesdays have become something the students eagerly anticipate. As Chipo explains, the children wait excitedly for the volunteers to arrive so they can begin their lessons.

That enthusiasm is a powerful reflection of what the programme means to them. Beyond the reading exercises, the volunteers bring encouragement, consistency and a sense of connection. Their presence helps make learning something the children look forward to, while regular sessions allow them to build on what they have learnt and continue making progress.

For Chipo, the partnership has become a valued part of the Rugare community. She speaks warmly of Zimworx, expressing gratitude for both the practical assistance and the volunteers who sincerely support the students.

“We are so overjoyed to partner with Zimworx as our family and grateful to the volunteers who come through and assist our students sincerely.”

Her words reflect the heart of the relationship: a shared commitment to helping children learn, grow and feel supported. From the school jerseys that bring warmth during winter to the reading programme that strengthens essential skills, Zimworx’s involvement demonstrates how consistent, thoughtful support can make a difference in children’s everyday experiences.
